2014 Outstanding Alumna Award Winner

Baeteena Black is the Executive Director of the Tennessee Pharmacists Association, a position she has held since September 1, 1994. Dr. Black is a second generation pharmacist having begun her career in her dad’s independent community pharmacy, McAdoo’s Pharmacy, in Martin, Tennessee.

She attended the University of Tennessee at Martin for her pre-pharmacy course work and received her B.S. in Pharmacy (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in Memphis, Tennessee. Following graduation she worked at Bartlett Pharmacy in Bartlett, Tennessee with Richard and Barbara Wells. She later served as the Director of Pharmacy for the Shelby County Health Care Center, a nursing home facility in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to returning to Tennessee to become TPA’s Executive Director, she was the Director of Pharmacy Affairs and State Health Services for G. D. Searle in Chicago, Illinois.

Baeteena has been active in local, state and national pharmacy organizations throughout her career having served as TPA President in 1988-89 and President of the UT College of Pharmacy Alumni Association in 1983-1984. She served as President of the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) in 2009-2010 and is currently serving as President of the Alliance for Patient Medication Safety (APMS), a federally listed patient safety organization. She is also serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Pharmacy Practice Accreditation.

Baeteena has received numerous awards and recognitions for her service to the pharmacy profession including the Tennessee Society of Health System Pharmacists Distinguished Service Award, the Searle Award for Contributions that are Exceptional, the Lambda Kappa Sigma Vanguard Leadership Award, the TPA Tom Sharp Pharmacist of the Year Award, and the Tennessee Society of Association Executives Association Executive of the Year.

Baeteena is married to Bob Black, her husband of 49 years whom she met while he was a student at the University of Tennessee at Martin. They have a daughter, Stacey Black, who attended and received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she played in the Pride of the Southland Band and who now works for Elavon and resides in Knoxville.
