2020 Most Supportive Award Winner
Dean Martin of Franklin, Tennessee, is being recognized with the most supportive alumni award for his role in creating the Dorothy McCarley Martin Nurse Scholarship in honor of his wife who received her BSN from the UTHSC College of Nursing in 1956.
Dorothy Martin was a registered nurse who worked for the Veteran’s Administration for 31 years. She passed away Jan. 1, 2006, and Mr. Martin established the scholarship in her loving memory in 2007.
Mr. Martin was in the U.S. Air Force when he met and married Dorothy McCarley. They made their home in Memphis for more than 20 years. After leaving the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Martin worked for the Federal Aviation Administration at Memphis International Airport. The Martins moved to Franklin, Tennessee, in the early 2000’s, where Mr. Martin continued to work in avionics and Mrs. Martin continued in her nursing practice.
In addition to her nursing career, Mrs. Martin was involved in community activities including the Scottish Society of Middle Tennessee and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Since the Dorothy McCarley Martin Nurse Scholarship was established, 19 students have received financial assistance in their nursing education through the generosity of Dean Martin.
