2014 Outstanding Alumnus Award Winner
Dr. Jack Alperin attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1957. After obtaining his medical degree, Dr. Alperin received postgraduate training in internal medicine and hematology at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, followed by serving on the internal medicine faculty at Chicago Medical School.
After completing a fellowship in the Hematology Research Laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in 1965, he joined the faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine. He was one of the first faculty members in the Department of Human Genetics at UTMB (later a part of the Department of Human Biological Chemistry and Genetics). Currently, Dr. Alperin is a clinical professor in the departments of Internal Medicine, Pathology, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. He serves as a consultant in hematology and transfusion medicine and is the associate director of the Blood Bank. In past years, he has been acting director of the Blood Bank and acting chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology.
Dr. Alperin is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and has received the Laureate Award from its Texas Chapter. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association (TMA), Galveston County Medical Society, American Society of Hematology, International Society of Haematology, International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, American Association of Blood Banks, and American Osler Society. During his lengthy career, Dr. Alperin has been actively involved in hematologic research and is the author or coauthor of more than 125 papers and abstracts on a wide range of topics related to the study of blood and its diseases. These articles have appeared in numerous publications including but not limited to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Archives of Internal Medicine, Blood, American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Transfusion, New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Hematology, JAMA, and Texas Medicine.
Dr. Alperin has chaired and served on countless committees at UTMB. Also, he served for many years on the Working Group on Hemoglobin Variants Subcommittee of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards and continues to serve on the Executive Committee of the Hemophilia Care Providers Group, US Public Health Region VI. In Texas, he has served on the TMA Committee on Blood and Tissue Usage and on the Board of Directors of the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine. He is a past president of the Galveston County Medical Society.
His abiding commitment to medical education, centered on compassionate and scientifically based clinical care, was recognized when he was named an inaugural Osler Scholar in the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine at UTMB. He has taught generations of medical students, house staff, and blood banking technologists. His students have distinguished themselves in state and national “Clinical Vignette” competitions sponsored by the American College of Physicians. Many of his trainees have been recognized as outstanding academic physicians and practicing clinicians. Dr. Alperin’s numerous teaching awards include the Golden Apple Award, two awards from the Department of Internal Medicine Alumni Association, and the UTMB School of Medicine Alumni Association Appreciation Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Alperin has been recognized at UTMB for his Commitment to Continuing Education from the School of Specialist in Blood Banking and from the Blood Bank Staff. He has received the Best Clinical Pathology Faculty Award in 2006 and 2012 presented by the pathology residents. Other honors include election to Alpha Omega Alpha, an award for Service to Hemophilia from the Lone Star Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation, and being named one of the “Best Doctors in Texas” by Texas Monthly annually from 2006 through 2012.
