2025 Outstanding AlumnA Award Winner

Dr. Thompson’s educational and professional journey has been paved in orange. She is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and her undergraduate experience was marked not only by academic pursuits but also by support of UT’s athletic community as a UT Pom Pon team member. Following re-location from Knoxville to Memphis for medical school, Dr. Thompson became a proud graduate of the 1998 class of the UT Health Science Center College of Medicine. She subsequently completed her internship and residency training in Medicine-Pediatrics at UT Health Science Center and on completion of residency training, served as Chief Resident for the Internal Medicine residency.

Dr. Thompson joined the ranks of UT Health Science Center faculty in 2003 as the Program Director for the Medicine-Pediatrics program and the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program. She is credited with growing the Medicine-Pediatrics program to one of the largest programs in the country. Following 14 years of service as the Medicine-Pediatrics Program Director, she was appointed Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education in 2019, a role that she continues to hold with the mission of training the next generation of physicians for the state of Tennessee. As Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, she focuses on resident/fellow education and oversight of accreditation for the 70-plus ACGME-accredited programs sponsored by the College of Medicine at UT Health Science Center. Her clinical practice is at UT-BMG Internal Medicine, and she considers herself fortunate to have developed long-standing, trusting relationships with her patients and her practice partners.

Dr. Thompson has been the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, the Top 20 Teaching Award from the UT Health Science Center Department of Medicine, a many-year recipient of the Memphis Best Doctors recognition, a recipient of the Exceptional Woman in Medicine award since 2020 and a two-time nominee for the UT Transparent and Trusted President’s Award.

After work, you can typically find Dr. Thompson near a baseball field, either watching her 3 boys playing ball or cheering on the Vols baseball team. She is immensely thankful for the love and support of her spouse, John and her boys, Cooper, Jake and Dylan.
