S. Barrett Sexton

Barrett Sexton, Sr. grew up in Memphis, TN, and received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1993.

He received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry in 1997 and then went on to pursue residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Sexton completed a one-year fellowship in 1998 at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and then went on to complete his residency in 2002 at the same institution. While there, he was heavily involved in research involving hyperbaric oxygen therapy and bone graft reconstruction in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

In 2002, Dr. Sexton moved home to Memphis and went into private practice with Dr. John Cannon. He practiced with Dr. Cannon for 10 years where they spent much of their time in the hospital setting taking care of patients. During those early years, Dr. Sexton’s practice focused on orthognathic, trauma, and reconstructive surgery, while building his private practice. He was also a part time professor in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the College of Dentistry and enjoyed his years there being able to teach and interact with the residents and the dental students. He currently practices with Dr. Scott Weiskopf and Dr. Matt Russ, and they maintain three offices in the Memphis metropolitan area.

Dr. Sexton is the recipient of the Tennessee Dental Association Fellowship Award this past year.  In 2016, he was asked to co-chair the Surgery section at the annual Mid-South Mission of Mercy, which is a free, two-day dental clinic for the under-served and under-insured people living in the Memphis and surrounding Mid-South area. Since 2016, the mission has treated more than 13,000 patients in the greater Memphis area with the help of over 11,000 volunteers. Dr. Sexton will tell you that two of his biggest influences have been his parents. His father, Dr. Jim Sexton, a 1962 graduate of the College of Dentistry and his mother, Pat Sexton, past president of the Tennessee Dental Alliance, have been examples and inspiration of what it means to give back. Both have served in missions across the globe and here in the local community to help those in need.

Dr. Sexton states that his faith and his family are the most important parts of his life. He continues to practice in the Memphis metro area and has been married to his devoted and supportive wife, Suzanne, for almost 29 years. They have three children, Grace, Anne Claire, and Barrett, Jr.
